Joe Rogan defends Jimmy Kimmel over backlash from Melania widow joke

Joe Rogan is pushing back on the outrage surrounding Jimmy Kimmel, arguing that the reaction only exploded after the attempted shooting not when the joke actually aired.

Kimmel had made a remark during a parody of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, joking that Melania Trump looked like an “expectant widow.” At the time it aired, Rogan says it barely registered with anyone. According to him, there wasn’t much public reaction on Thursday or even into Saturday until news broke that night about the assassination attempt targeting figures tied to the Trump administration. That’s when critics suddenly started pointing fingers at Kimmel.

On his podcast, Rogan made the case that people are retroactively assigning intent to the joke. He pointed out that it could be interpreted in different ways either as a jab at Trump’s age or as darker political humor, depending on how someone chooses to hear it. His broader argument is that context is being rewritten after the fact to fit the moment.

Meanwhile, the situation escalated beyond media debate. Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Cole Allen, a California-based computer scientist, who allegedly left behind a manifesto outlining his intended targets within the Trump administration.

Melania Trump responded strongly, calling Kimmel’s remarks harmful and accusing him of contributing to what she described as a toxic political climate. President Trump also weighed in, going further by urging ABC and Disney to fire Kimmel, labeling the joke as crossing a serious line.

Kimmel, for his part, hasn’t backed down. Instead of apologizing, he addressed the controversy on his show with more sarcasm, joking about the unusual experience of waking up to the first lady calling for his job.

At the center of all this is a familiar debate: where comedy ends and responsibility begins especially in a political climate that already feels on edge. Rogan’s take seems to be that outrage is being driven more by timing than by the joke itself, while critics argue that words like these contribute to a broader culture that’s already too heated.
