Following the incident, Melania Trump publicly responded on X, calling for ABC to take action against Kimmel. The timing of the joke added even more fuel to the discussion, coming shortly before a security incident at a Washington, D.C. hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Authorities reported that a man attempted to breach a security checkpoint while armed, resulting in an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service personnel. One officer was injured but survived, and the suspect was taken into custody. The situation led to a major evacuation of attendees, including members of the Trump family and cabinet officials, and the event was ultimately canceled.


Although there is no official link between Kimmel’s remarks and the security incident, the proximity of the two events intensified criticism from his detractors, who argue that heated political rhetoric in media and entertainment can contribute to a toxic atmosphere.


ABC has not issued a public response regarding the First Lady’s call for action.
